His Holiness Taklung Tsetrul Rinpoche (1926–2015)
His Holiness Taklung Tsetrul Rinpoche was one of the most respected masters of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism and a foremost lineage holder of the Northern Treasures (Jangter) tradition. Revered for his scholarship, humility, and deep realization, he played a crucial role in preserving and transmitting the teachings during a time of great change for Tibetan Buddhism.
Early Life and Recognition
He was born in 1926 in Central Tibet and was recognized at a young age as the reincarnation of the previous Taklung Tsetrul Rinpoche, a prominent holder of the Northern Treasures lineage. From childhood, he entered monastic training and immersed himself in the study of philosophy, ritual, meditation, and the esoteric teachings of the Nyingma tradition.
He received extensive transmissions and empowerments from many of the greatest masters of his time, ensuring that the unbroken lineage of the Northern Treasures would continue into the modern era.
Holder of the Northern Treasures
Taklung Tsetrul Rinpoche eventually became one of the principal custodians of the Jangter teachings, maintaining their practice and transmission with exceptional dedication. After leaving Tibet, he helped re-establish Dorje Drak Monastery in exile in India, restoring it as a vital seat of learning and practice for the Northern Treasures tradition.
Through his tireless efforts — teaching, giving empowerments, guiding monks and lay practitioners, and supporting the preservation of ritual and scholarship — he ensured that this ancient lineage would remain vibrant and accessible to future generations.
Leadership and Legacy
Later in life, he was recognized as the head of the Nyingma school, a role that reflected the immense respect he commanded across all Tibetan Buddhist traditions. Despite his high position, he was widely known for his gentle presence, simplicity, and unwavering commitment to the Dharma.
His legacy continues today through his students, the institutions he helped rebuild, and the ongoing flourishing of the Northern Treasures lineage. He was also the grandfather of the present Dorje Drak Gyalsay Rinpoche, symbolizing both a familial and spiritual continuity within this living tradition.
His Holiness Taklung Tsetrul Rinpoche passed away in 2015, leaving behind an enduring example of wisdom, compassion, and devoted service to the teachings of the Buddha.
