What is Jangter (Northern Treasures)
Jangter, the Northern Treasures is sacred termas that were revealed by the great Mahasiddha Terton Rigdzin Gödem, who was regarded as an incarnation of Nanam Dorje Dudjom, one of the five close disciples of Guru Rinpoche.
It is said that he first received the prophetic script from Tulku Zangpo Drakpa, which guided him to the hidden casket where the Northern Treasures were concealed. When Rigdzin Gödem was twenty-nine years old, in the Year of the Horse, he discovered the key to the treasure at Mount Trazang in Tibet. A year later, at the age of thirty, he journeyed to Zang Zang Lhadrak and opened the secret doorway to the sacred treasury.
On the steep cliffs stood a rock cave shaped like a coiled venomous serpent. Beneath the sacred symbol of the Vajra Cross, he turned the hidden key, and the rock face opened to reveal a square blue stone chamber with nine doors, each sealed with silver-colored bolts.
Inside lay a blue-green serpent with a yellow belly, thick as a human arm, coiled like an eight-sided jewel and facing the southeast. From its heart emerged sacred objects — a precious jewel and a holy scroll.
From the Central Black Heart Treasury, three scrolls and three ritual daggers wrapped in dark blue silk were brought forth.
From the White Conch Treasury in the east appeared the Dharma vast and unobstructed like the sky.
From the Yellow Gold Treasury in the south came the teachings of the fourfold approach and accomplishment, radiant like the sun and moon.
From the Red Copper Treasury in the west arose the Dharma of profound interdependence, flourishing like a fragrant sandalwood tree.
And from the Black Iron Treasury in the north were revealed fierce teachings that subdue obstacles and harmful forces.
In this way, many sacred teachings and precious substances were uncovered, including the supreme treasure known as Kunzang Gongpa Zangthal, bringing immense benefit to practitioners for generations to come.
